Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Do I need a plumber to install The Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve? Though some people would be more comfortable having a plumber install it, installation is actually quite easy – any handyman (or handywoman) can install it. All you do is turn off the water (by turning the valve knob) and follow the directions. Installation typically takes only about 15 minutes.
  • What happens when an overflow is sensed? If the water in the bowl rises high enough to touch the sensor, the motorized valve is triggered and turns off the water supply to the toilet tank. The beeping alarm will then sound for 60 seconds. To turn the water back on and refill the tank -- press the "Open Valve" button, you'll hear the motorized valve turn and the water begin to fill the tank.
  • How loud is the alarm? The alarm is 79 Db – loud enough for most people to hear from outside of the bathroom.
  • How long does the water remain turned off? In the event of a detected overflow, the water supply remains turned off with the red light flashing until it is reset.
  • How do I turn the water back on? Just press the "Open Valve" button on the Main Control.
  • How do I turn off the alarm beeping? The alarm will sound for only 60 seconds. then it goes off automatically.
  • Will I still be able to use the sink if the water is turned off? Yes, only the water going to the toilet is affected.
  • Are tools needed to install the product? You may need a wrench to loosen your existing fittings, however, the manufacturer says, "Use of tools is not recommended."
  • Does The Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve have to plug into the wall? No, it is powered by four AA batteries (included)
  • Will The Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve work on all toilets? The Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve will work on virtually all standard tank style toilets.
  • Where does The Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve go? The Main Control fits on the water supply line underneath the toilet, the bowl overflow sensor attaches to the rim of the toilet rim, and (if you choose to use it) the low tank water alert goes in the water tank behind the toilet.
  • What else will The Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve do? The unit also comes with a water leak alert that goes in the toilet tank to sense a flapper that will not go down. If, when the toilet is flushed, the water level remains too low for more than six minutes (an unseated flapper), the Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve again goes into action and turns off the water.
  • Can I use the same water supply line that's already on my toilet? In our test of The Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve we found that it was best to replace our rigid straight pipe with a flexible water supply pipe (available at any hardware or home improvement supply store).
  • Does the Alzheimer's Store guarantee that there will be no toilet overflows if I install The Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve? We wish that we could, but no product in the world is perfect! We can tell you that we have found this product to be very reliable and are proud to offer it in The Alzheimer's Store.
  • My toilet won't flush, what's wrong? This is a signal indicating that The Toilet Overflow Alarm & Control Valve may have detected a problem and cut off the water supply. As such, the toilet water tank is probably empty and therefore nothing happens when you flush the toilet. In this case, First check the bowl for any obstructions. Then press the "Open Valve" button to turn the water back on and fill the tank. Your toilet should be back to normal in just a few minutes.
